Ahead of Independence Day celebrations, the local police conducted search operations at the interstate bus terminus, while flag marches were held in the Hall Bazaar and Lawrence Road areas on Wednesday.
A police team, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Alam Vijay Singh, carried out cordon and search operations at the bus stand. Sniffer dogs were also deployed during the operation. Belongings of suspicious individuals were checked on buses.
DCP Alam Vijay Singh said regular security checks are being conducted at key locations, including railway stations, bus stands and the airport. He said that security across the city has been tightened. Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr Sheetal Singh and Harminder Singh also accompanied him during the operation.
Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar led the flag march in the Lawrence Road area, starting from Novelty Chowk. Meanwhile, another flag march was carried out in Hall Bazaar by a team led by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishaljit Singh.
Commissioner Bhullar said that police personnel stationed at various checkpoints have been briefed about their responsibilities. All entry and exit points, as well as areas within the city, are being monitored by officers of the ADCP and ACP rank. Regular vehicle checks are also underway.
He added that strict action is being taken against vehicles with black-tinted windows, modified tyres, loud horns and other violations. Police teams are also inspecting hotels, sarais and guest houses as part of the security measures.
