Powercom team fired at in Harike

Tarn Taran: Officials of the Powercom Department had a narrow escape on Monday as a family of Harike village, stealing power, fired at them. In a complaint to the police, Harike SDO stated the officials had gone to collect default payment, when they noticed power theft through direct connection from a meter box. When the officials questioned the family members, they were fired at by the family. The officials had a narrow escape. The suspects, Sukhwinder Singh and his son, have booked under Sections 353, 186 and 336 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act. The police said the suspects were absconding. OC

Medical college staff protest

Amritsar: Employees of Government Medical College and constituent institutes will hold a protest on Wednesday to oppose the government’s decision to provide autonomous status to the institute. They held a meeting in this regard on Tuesday. The ‘Joint Employees Group’ formed to organise the protest will be headed by Dr Mridu Grover, Dr Ashok Chanana, Dr Jaspreet Singh, Jagdish Thakur, Tajinder Singh Dhillon and representatives of other associations. The employees said it was not possible for the institute to achieve self sustainability and it needed government’s support. TNS

Three held with 554-gm heroin

Tarn Taran: The CIA staff of local police nabbed three persons from the outskirts of Pandori Ran Singh village, 15 km from here, and seized 554 gm of heroin, a 32 bore pistol and two cartridges from them. A case under Sections 21, 29, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act and 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered at the Chabal police station. Jagjit Singh Walia, SP (investigation), said the accused had been identified as Shamsher Singh Billa, Jaswant Singh Jass and Baldev Singh Kali of Amritsar district. He said accused Shamsher Singh procured the consignment from Kulwant Singh of Amritsar. OC
