Tarn Taran, December 23

A proclaimed offender (PO) was shot dead in Ward No.2 of Patti town here on Thursday evening over an old rivalry with a neighbouring family. The deceased has been identified as Sajan Singh (23), who got married just two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, the family members of the victim and residents of the locality organised a protest on Friday with the body kept in front of the Patti (city) police station alleging that the police were not serious in arresting the person responsible for the murder. On the assurance of justice to be provided to the victim’s family by police officials, the protesters lifted their dharna.

Inspector Paramjit Singh, SHO, Patti city, said the deceased was a proclaimed offender (PO) in an attempt to murder case as he and his brother Nona had shot injured Bobby who was nominated in the Sajan Singh murder case.

In his statement to the police, the victim’s father Jaspal Singh, a resident of Ward No.2, stated that his son Sajan was returning home from the market on Thursday when he was attacked by Bobby, Bikkar Singh, Jarmal Singh and his son Karan Singh, all neighbours of the victim. Karan on being provoked by others fired at Sajan leaving him seriously injured. Sajan was rushed to a private hospital in Patti where doctors declared him brought dead.

Inspector Paramjit Singh reached the spot soon after he got information and started collecting evidence. The SHO said the accused had been booked under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC and under Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.

The postmortem of the body was conducted at the Civil Hospital, Patti. Satnam Singh, DSP, Patti, said the accused were absconding and raids were being conducted at their possible hideouts.

While protesting in front of the city police station with the body, the family members alleged that the police were not serious about arresting the accused.

It was a serious issue that in both cases — this murder and the involvement of Sajan in an attempt to murder case some time ago — both sides used illegal weapons (revolvers). There were reports that illegal weapons like country-made revolvers were being used by a large number of miscreants indulging in anti-social activities in villages.
