Amritsar, July 13

Commuters were put to great inconvenience as members of the Punbus Contractual Workers’ Union parked buses on the roads around the Shahid Madan Lal Dhingra ISBT here on Wednesday. They held a protest from 10 am to 12 pm at the ISBT, demanding that their salaries be released at the earliest.

Members of the Punbus Contractual Workers’ Union went on strike in Amritsar.

Vehicular movement was hampered as buses parked on the road outside the ISBT left little space for other vehicles to pass. Besides traffic blockades were visible at several spots.

The situation went from bad to worse for people who remained stuck in traffic jams. Besides, they had to tolerate both heat and pollution emitted by vehicles in this hot and humid weather.

Sarbjit Singh, whose shop is close to the ISBT, said the parking of buses near the ISBT started around 9.30 am. “Right from that time, commuters started facing trouble with traffic chaos being witnessed on the road. Commuters kept honking horns to find a way out of this hell on the road. Unable to find space, many of them reversed their vehicles leading to further congestion on the road,” he said.

Kuljit Singh, president of the PUNBUS Contractual Workers’ Union, said the government was not releasing their salary on time. It had become a regular practice to not release salary on time and they received the last salary on June 22, he added.
