To mark the Human Rights Day 2024, Punjab State Human Rights Commission’s (PSHRC) chairman Justice Sant Parkash along with Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-secretary district legal services authority AS Bains and other administrative and police officials visited Amritsar Central Jail on Monday.
The jail houses as many as 3,948 inmates, comprising 3,788 males, 160 females, and six minor children staying with their mothers. He reviewed the conditions of these inmates and inquired about their grievances.
He emphasised on the importance of collaboration among the district administration, MC, police administration, healthcare facilities and jail authorities to uphold human rights standards and address systemic challenges.
He also visited the kitchen and tasted the meals served and expressed satisfaction with the quality of food being served to the prisoners.
The Civil Surgeon said reported that the jail is equipped with four permanent doctors. Several inmate grievances were addressed on the spot with directives issued to the officials concerned. — TNS
