Amritsar, February 20
Members of the Punjab Students Union (PSU) on Wednesday staged a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR) outside the Deputy Commissioner office here. The protesters also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Shivdular Singh Dhillon, requesting him to forward it to the Union Government.
The state senior vice-president of the PSU, Hardeep Kaur Kotla, said the three laws were “anti-people” and should be revoked. The BJP-led Central Government had violated the secular spirit of the Constitution by linking citizenship to religion, she said.
The student leaders said the Centre must rather focus on issues concerning the country’s economy and employment and than playing “divide-and-rule” politics. Hardeep Kaur said they would continue to register their protest until the government revoked the laws.
