Rain lashes Tarn Taran areas, damages early varieties of paddy; farmers suffer

Rain, which began in the evening of Monday, continued to batter the border district of Tarn Taran till around 3 pm on Tuesday. As a result, normal life was badly affected.

Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds damaged the early varieties of paddy/basmati. In Tarn Taran town, most of the offices were flooded with knee-deep water, adversely affecting normal functioning like public dealing.

Rainwater entered the city police station, School of Eminence, Tarn Taran, the SDO complex and many other offices situated along roads, bazaars and streets of the town. Cops present at the police station had to make strenuous efforts to drain out the rainwater collected on the police station premises.

The tall claims of the district administration that they have made enough rainwater drainage arrangements proved hollow after rain. Owing to poor drainage, rainwater remained accumulated at Dhotian, Chabal, Kasel, Nagoke, Bhikhiwind Khalra, Valtoha, Varnala, Khemkaran, Chohla Sahib, Khadoor Sahib and other villages of the district, as a result of which residents had to face great difficulty in moving place to place or in reaching their destinations.

Heavy rain damaged a portion of the house owned by Dalbir Singh Deera at Rasulpur village on Tuesday. Official sources said that 190 mm rain was recorded in Tarn Taran tehsil followed by 98 MM in Patti and 75 mm in Khadoor Sahib.
