Amritsar, February 27
Expanding the scope of Rangla Punjab Mela, the ‘Seva Street’ set up at the Heritage Street saw several non-profit organisations engage in community service highlighting the causes that they support. From free medical check-up camps, blood donation drives to collecting clothes and other relief items for the needy, the initiative reflects the message of ‘seva’ that the city is famous for.
Assistant Commissioner Gursimranjeet Kaur said while books are being distributed among the needy children on ‘Seva Street’, plants are also being distributed to visitors in a bid to save the environment and to protect the people from water, air and soil pollution.
Today, Azad Bhagat Singh Heritage Forum and theatre artistes from Amritsar performed nukkad nataks, to spread awareness about feticide, drugs, beti bachao beti padhao and other sensitive topics through their street plays.
“An effort has been made to boost the feeling of selfless service, through the ‘Seva Street’ as Punjabis are known world over for it,” said Gursimranjeet. She appealed to the residents of the city to come together and celebrate the spirit of generosity and community service. Social Welfare Officer Palav Shrestha, officials from Red Cross and other officials of the tourism department also set up camps.
