Amritsar, January 17

Around 400 varieties of rose plants have been arranged by the SGPC only to be planted in the green belt that is being developed inside the Golden Temple complex. Christened as “Guru Ka Bagh”, a two-acre plot between Guru Ram Dass Jee Langar Hall and Gurdwara Manji Sahib has been demarcated for the purpose.

SGPC chief secretary Dr Roop Singh said Baba Kashmir Singh Bhuriwale had volunteered to do this service in consultation with experts, including Dr JS Bilga, architect Sumit Midha and Sawinder Pal Singh. “The roses, which were received on Friday from Bengaluru, were advised to be planted next month as severe cold conditions may hamper their proper growth,” he said.

Dr Roop Singh said some rare and unique colour flowers and saplings would be planted here. Besides, special lights and fountains would be installed at strategic locations, which would add to the beauty of the garden from dawn to dusk.

Lately, the SGPC is planting special vines that would eventually fall on the inner walls of the existing structures located on the periphery of the ‘parikrama’. Named as ‘rooftop garden’, this initiative was being carried out under expert guidance of Punjab Agricultural University. It was in addition to the vertical garden under which 35,000 plants prospered in the shrine complex.
