Amritsar, January 20

At least three cars have rammed into wall of the Bhandari bridge while coming from the Elevated road after the start of winter season. The entrance to the bridge has become an accident-prone black spot, especially during the ongoing foggy weather conditions.

Local residents are aware of the left turn which they take as soon as the Elevated road ends. Outsiders continue to drive their vehicles at the same speed as they are not aware of the turn. The authorities must act before someone loses life in an accident. — Jatinder Singh, Road safety activist

During low visibility on foggy nights, drivers of vehicles coming from the Elevated road fail to see barricading on the Bhandari bridge where the road takes a left turn towards a leg of the bridge which leads towards the railway station.

The first accident on the spot was reported on New Year eve when a car rammed into the concrete barricading on the Bhandari bridge. The traffic police installed iron barricades on the spot as concrete wall of the bridge was broken after the accident. However, accidents continue to occur at the same spot. Luckily, no one has been injured in all these accidents.

Residents have demanded that light reflectors and warning signs should be installed on the bridge to make drivers aware of the barricading and the left turn so that they can slow down their vehicles on time.

“Local residents are aware of the left turn which they take as soon as the Elevated road ends. Outsiders continue to drive their vehicles at the same speed as they are not aware of the turn,” said Jatinder Singh, a road safety activist. He said the authorities concerned must act before someone loses life in an accident.
