Rego overbridge construction work continues at slow pace in Amritsar
The construction of the Rego overbridge in Amritsar continues to progress at a snail’s pace, causing major inconvenience to residents and commuters. Even 14 months after the commencement of the project, authorities have failed to demolish the structure of old bridge, raising concerns over its timely completion.
The railway authorities had started demolishing the 118-year-old bridge belonging to the British era in December 2023, citing its dilapidated condition and also because it had exceeded its intended lifespan of 100 years. The government had promised to complete the new bridge within two years, at an estimated cost of Rs 50 crore. However, given the slow pace of work, residents fear that it will not be completed within the remaining 10 months of the stipulated deadline.
Due to the closure of Rego overbridge, commuters are forced to use alternative routes such as Bhandari Bridge and the bridge in front of Khalsa College, leading to massive traffic congestion in the city. Local shopkeepers and businesses along the route have also been severely affected, as the prolonged construction work has disrupted their livelihoods.
Residents have urged the authorities to expedite the reconstruction process, considering the city’s growing traffic needs. The new four-lane bridge, once completed, is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and reduce travel time for commuters. However, the delay has left the public frustrated.
Social activist Pawan Sharma expressed his disappointment over the slow pace of work. “The authorities were supposed to complete the project within 24 months, but even after 14 months, they have not been able to demolish the old structure. There is no hope that the bridge will be completed in the next 10 months. Residents are facing major inconvenience due to the closure of the bridge,” he said.
With traffic congestion worsening and no clear timeline for completion, residents continue to demand that the administration prioritise the construction work and ensure its completion within the promised time- frame.
