Rescue work proves fatal for sambar

Another Sambar died while being rescued from a 66 kv power sub-station at the Sultanwind road here today.

It was the second such death of the protected wild animal in 10 days. A sambar was rescued from Company Bagh on November 20 and died on the same day while being taken to be released in a forest.

A video of the entire episode went viral on social media in which a few persons were seen chasing the scared sambar with ropes and sticks in the power sub-station. Its gates were locked. Several people were peeping through iron gates to see the animal.

While being chased to ensnare Sambar with primitive methods of rope and sticks, it sustained injuries.

District Forest Officer Surjit Singh Sahota said, “After giving first aid, the sambar was was taken for release in the nearby forest area. However, it died on the way.”

Animal lovers have accused the government of not providing wildlife staff with modern gadgets, like tranquilizer gun, to capture animals.
