Three armed persons looted a branch of the Punjab National Bank on gunpoint at Basarke Gillan village here yesterday evening. The looters decamped with Rs 4.41 lakh from a woman head cashier of the bank. The Gharinda police have registered a case in this connection. The police have yet to make any breakthrough in the case.
Naresh Malik, a resident of Bhagtanwala, told the police that he works as a peon in the bank. He said yesterday around 4.30 pm, two unidentified persons with covered faces entered the bank premises. One of them was carrying a pistol while the other was armed with sharp weapon (Datar). Immediately after entering the bank, they threatened bank employees. The man with sharp weapon entered the cabin of head cashier identified as Rompi and asked her to handover whatever cash was there. As she got frightened, the suspect opened the cash box and took out
Rs 4.41 lakh in cash. He put the cash in a bag and the duo fled from the bank. Naresh said one of their accomplices was waiting for them outside the bank on a bike.
Investigating officer ASI Jaswinder Singh said the police had scanned footage of nearly 150 CCTV cameras in the periphery of the bank. Efforts were on to identify and arrest the suspects, he said. A case under relevant sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act had been registered against unknown miscreants, he added.
