When Mehal Singh returned to his village, armed assailants led by Jagrup Singh were firing at his house. He was accompanied by Mandeep Singh and Jaswant Singh in a car. Mehal Singh, in his complaint to the police, stated that the assailants who were armed with weapons, came to his house in vehicles. He said they fired indiscriminately at his house. Bullets hit doors and windowpanes, he said.

On watching the firing, Mehal Singh raised an alarm, but assailants managed to flee from the spot. There was a dispute regarding a money transaction between Jagrup and Robanpreet Singh, son of Mehal Singh. The assailants did not want to return money to Robanpreet.
