Sikh organisations pledge to repair, rebuild houses damaged in floods

Several Sikh groups have pledged to take part in kar seva (voluntary service) being carried out for repairing and rebuilding houses damaged in the recent floods in the state. The initiative has been supported by organisations such as the Guru-Adab Morcha, Sirhind, Sangat Seva Samprada and Lok Raj Punjab.

Dr Manjeet Singh Randhawa, convener of the Guru-Adab Morcha, said Sikh sampradas have assured that they would not only carry out repairs on damaged houses, but would also provide long-term support to flood victims. They have also planned to promote orchard farming, cooperative dairy farms, and profitable agri-industries with the help of Sikh community.

The decision was taken near the samadhi of Baba Budha Ji at Chak Ramdas, close to the Sakki embankment. Sikh leaders said with the blessings of the Guru Granth Sahib, the community is committed to both rebuilding homes and creating strong, permanent embankments along rivers to prevent future disasters.

Prominent Sikh leaders, including Baba Sardara Singh, Baba Kirpal Singh, Baba Satnam Singh, Bhai Sandeep Singh Khajanekot, and Dr Manjeet Singh Randhawa, were present on the occasion.

At the Sakki embankment breach site, sangat staged a symbolic protest. They demanded that the control of the Bhakra and Pong dams should be given to Punjab, arguing that mismanagement has worsened the flood situation.

They appealed to the Punjabis to join hands to help in rebuilding lives.
