The services of Krishna Gaushala Welfare Society, Chohla Sahib, which is dedicated to social and common cause, are being appreciated by all sections of society.
Thirteen donors from various social strata, who wanted to work for conserving the environment, formed the society about 10 years back with a few stray cows. The donors, with funds collected from their own pockets, have been working with dedication to save the environment.
At present, there are about 150 cows. Keeping in view the appreciable services of the society, the district administration handed over 50 more stray cows to them two years back as these were moving around on city roads round the clock, causing traffic bottlenecks and creating sanitation problems, leaving behind cow dung on roads.
Bhupinder Kumar Kala, president of the society, said they have taken three acres of land on lease to grow fodder to feed the cows. Four servants and a priest (pujari) have been deputed on salary basis for the Gaushala.
Land for the cow shed was allotted by the gram panchayat. Bhupinder Kumar Kala said that the amount was collected by the members of society themselves and no collection is claimed from other sources. Though the servants arranged by the society do their best to serve the cows kept in the Gaushala, a number of cow-lovers too come often to serve the animals.
The site has become a spot of devotion for the residents and people appreciate the efforts of society members as they are not only working for a good cause but also serving an animal that is much revered in keeping with the traditions.
