A state-level function was held today to commemorate the martyrdom of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s general, Sham Singh Attariwala. The event included a tribute ceremony, the bhog of Akhand Path and a cycle rally, among other activities.
Actress Gul Panag led a bicycle rally from India Gate to Attari, which was flagged off by Mayor Jatinder Singh Moti Bhatia, Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney, Brigadier Yogesh Sharma and Sourav Jamwal.
The state government marked the 179th martyrdom day of the renowned general of the Khalsa army at Attari Samadh with respect. On this occasion, MLA Jaswinder Singh Ramdas paid tribute to General Attariwala, describing him as a great leader of the Sikh community whose martyrdom continues to inspire future generations. He said martyrs belong to the nation, not just a single family. He recalled, on this day in 1846, Attariwala made the ultimate sacrifice while courageously fighting the British forces.
Ramdas also announced plans to revitalise Attari village, aiming to enhance the area for visitors and pilgrims coming to pay respects at Attariwala’s Samadh. He urged people to take part in such events to help educate children about their rich history.
In addition, dhadi groups performed ballads in memory of the martyr and a religious Diwan was held, with the Akhand Path performed at his Samadh. Dhadi jathas shared the story of General Attariwala’s life and his bravery with the gathering. A large number of people attended the event, offering floral tributes to the hero.
