Student artistes show skills at Guru Nanak varsity theatre fest
A four-day theatre festival was inaugurated on Tuesday at Guru Nanak Dev University by its vice-chancellor Prof Karamjeet Singh. The festival began on April 1 and will continue till April 4. The inaugural play, “Natak Paedan”, was performed by the university’s Drama Club and Awaaz Rangmanch Toli at the Dashmesh Auditorium, while on Day 2, the play “Dhanu Lekhari Nanaka” was staged.
“Natak Paedan”, written by Jatinder Brar and directed by Kanwal Randhe, was based on the story of a young child from a poor family. The play was centred on how kids, who grow up without basic things like food and shelter, face big challenges. While life can be unfair to them, when some people have more than enough, it often ends up reflecting on social acceptance and perpetration of this injustice.
“Dhanu Lekhari Nanaka”, a traditional play written and directed by Dr Sahib Singh and performed by Akhar Manch, Mohali, was inspired by the ideology of Guru Nanak Dev. It defined the writer’s relationship with society through the lens of the narrative. The play was the story of a sensitive writer around whom a lot is happening. In the play, the protagonist, a writer, was successful in conveying the message of being ready for any sacrifice, to contribute to social struggles and protect the truth. Creating a feeling of self-sacrifice for the larger good of humanity, the play weaved different stories through the dialogue between the writer and his daughter living in Delhi.
Prof Sunil Kumar, head, Drama Club & Department of Hindi, and convener of the festival, said that the festival is a platform for student artists to show their skill and talent on and off the stage. Actor Anita Devgan, who was the chief guest, lauded the efforts of the students artists for giving an engaging performance.
