Tarn Taran: Accident claims lives of 2 couples

In a terrible road accident, two couples were killed as the two cars they were travelling in collided head-on near Harike along National Highway No.54 here this morning. Besides, two drivers of the ill-fated cars were injured in the mishap.

The deceased have been identified as Jobanjeet Singh (27), his wife Pawanpreet Kaur (26), residents of Baba Bakala (Amritsar), Manjit Singh (50) and his wife Arwinder Kaur (48), residents of Barnala. Of the two injured, one has been identified as Pavittar Singh of Mehta (Amritsar), who was driving the Swift car in which Jobanjeet Singh and his wife were travelling and the other as Raghubir Singh, who was driving the car in which the other couple was travelling.

Jobanjeet Singh and Pawanpreet Kaur had married just six months ago, who were going to collect the degree of Pawanpreet from Baba Farid Medical University, Faridkot. When they reached near Paringri village, a motorcyclist appeared suddenly on the way of Swift car from the unauthorised route created by residents on their own. In order to save the motorcyclist, the driver lost control of the car, which turned turtle, crossed the divider on the national highway and collided with a Maruti car coming from the opposite (Barnala) side. The Maruti car couple was going to Amritsar to take medicine. The motorcyclist, who was the main reason behind the accident, had a narrow escape.

The drivers of the two cars were admitted to different hospitals. Their condition is stated to be stable. Both the ill-fated cars were badly damaged in the accident. On the statement of Raghubir Singh, Harike police had registered a case under Sections 304-A, 279 and 427 and other relevant sections of the IPC against the Swift car driver.
