Mehakpreet Kaur, a student of Class 12 of Government Girls Senior Secondary Smart School, Aladinpur (Tarn Taran), has some extraordinary qualities that make her a role model for the new generation. She is an outstanding student, a disciplined learner and state-level sportswoman besides possessing other qualities. As her mother passed away about two years back, she performs all the duties at home being the eldest among three siblings which makes her a homemaker too. She is well trained in kitchen affairs. Preparing meals and looking after the cattle are also part of her domestic work. She is also trained in farm work though the family has just one acre of agricultural land. Her father is a truck driver who has no fixed working hours and it disturbs the routine and studies of Mehakpreet Kaur. Kanwalpreet Kaur, a Physical Teacher who guides her in sports, said that Mehakpreet Kaur is the captain of the school team of national and circle style kabaddi teams. She has participated in state-level tourneys after winning at the zonal and district level tournaments. School principal Arwinder Kaur said that Mehakpreet Kaur not only gives a remarkable performance in sports, but is good at studies too. She got 91 per cent marks in her Class 10 exam, said the principal. Partap Singh Thathgarh, her class in-charge said that Mehakpreet Kaur never misses her class except on sports days when she take part in the zonal, district and state-level tournaments. Mehakpreet Kaur said that she dreams of taking part in national international level kabaddi tournaments. She takes a balanced diet and avoids junk food. Principal Arwinder Kaur said the school had high hopes from Mehakpreet Kaur and she is a role model for the new generation.
Union Minister for Sports requested to grant wrestling gear
Ranjit Singh Cheema, organiser of Guru Nanak Kushti Academy (GNKA), Indoor Multipurpose Hall, in a letter submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, Tarn Taran, addressed to Anurag Thakur, Union Minister for Sports, has demanded sports material for wrestlers practising in the indoor stadium here. The indoor stadium was constructed with grants released by the then Union Sports Minister Dr Manohar Singh Gill years back. As many as 100 wrestlers practice in the stadium daily. Even young wrestlers come for coaching here. Some of the wrestlers are either of state or national fame. The Academy is seeking better quality mattresses to replace the old ones. Ranjit Singh Cheema, in his letter to Union Minister Anurag Thakur, said the Majha belt has given the nation wrestlers of international fame and at present more facilities are required to give proper coaching to the young grapplers who are to take part in international-level tourneys. He said that more mattresses are required for practice. It was the only indoor stadium in the district and to equip it with modern mattresses is the need of the hour. Cheema said that wrestling is practised on mattresses at the international level while the new generations in villages still practice in earthen Akharas. (contributed by Gurbaxpuri)
