Tenders for the redevelopment of roads leading to the Golden Temple, issued by the Municipal Corporation (MC), have been cancelled once again due to administrative reasons. These roads in the walled city area have long been in dire need of attention.

In total, three e-tenders were floated by the MC, with an estimated value of about Rs 114 crore. These included the façade development and redevelopment of four radial roads leading to Darbar Sahib, at a cost of Rs 43.40 crore. The tenders were initially floated in February 2024, but they were postponed and reopened in November 2024 after a reduction in the price. However, they were cancelled due to technical reasons. On December 7, a new tender notice was issued. In addition to the radial roads redevelopment, tenders for the construction of other roads in the Central, Southern Assembly, and West Assembly constituencies, totalling Rs 49.41 crore, were also floated.

These tenders were scheduled to be opened on January 9, but following the announcement of the MC elections and the imposition of the code of conduct, the process was halted. After the elections, another e-tender for the construction of roads, markets, and lanes in the North and East Assembly constituencies, worth Rs 21.28 crore, was issued on December 23. This tender was slated to open on January 20. However, on January 6, all three e-tenders were removed from the corporation’s website.

According to sources, a meeting between the Minister and senior officials from the Local Body Department and the MC discussed these tenders, resulting in their cancellation. A senior MC official confirmed that the tenders were cancelled due to administrative reasons, citing the availability of funds for the radial roads redevelopment from Amritsar Smart City Limited (ASCL), but insufficient funding for other works included in the tenders. The official stated that the tenders would be reissued soon.
