The police have nabbed three persons, who snatched a taxi from a local resident at gunpoint, last night. The suspects were arrested within hours of the incident.

They were identified as Arshdeep Singh, Yadwinder Singh and Parmeshar Singh, all residents of Burj Mehma in Bathinda. The police recovered the snatched taxi, a toy pistol and a sharp weapon from their possession.

Prabhjot Singh Virk, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, said Rajiv Sharma told the police that he used to drive a taxi bearing registration No. PB0188163. Sharma said he was at the city centre when three youth came to him and hired his taxi at Rs 700 for bringing their friend from the Amritsar airport. The suspects said their friend was returning from Canada.

Sharma said while he was driving towards airport, the suspects took out a pistol and a sharp weapon and threw him out of the car on the Court Road flyover. Sharma said the suspects escaped towards the airport side.

Virk said a message was flashed at all police stations and chowkis. He said officials of the Gumtala police chowki laid a naka on the Airport road and arrested the suspects and recovered the taxi. They were brought on a police remand for further investigation. A case under Sections 379-B, 34, 427 and 411 of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act was registered against the three suspects at the Cantonment police station.
