A verbal duel that ensued after a minor brawl claimed the life of a 35-year-old man in Chabal township on Saturday night. The deceased has been identified as Surjit Singh, a resident of Gidgri Baghiari village. The deceased was working as an assistant at a flour mill (Atta Chakki) in Adda Chabal, owned by one Dilbag Singh.

Dilbag Singh engaged in a verbal duel with one Hardial Singh of Dode village over parking his car in front of the flour mill and in a fit of anger attacked him with a knife. The knife struck Surjit Singh in the chest. He was admitted to a private hospital in Chabal in a serious condition but was referred to a hospital in Amritsar. He succumbed to his injuries during the treatment.

Inspector Paramjit Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Chabal police station, visited the spot and collected evidence. A case has been registered under Section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against Hardial Singh of Dode village on the statement of Nirmal Singh, a relative of the deceased. The accused absconded from the spot. The post-mortem was conducted at the local civil hospital on Sunday.
