The police have booked two persons for the murder of a 36-year-old man whose body was found in sugarcane fields at Sheikhbhatti village here on Tuesday. The suspects, identified as Harjinder Singh of Hashampura and Jagsir Singh of Jalalabad in Fazilka, have been booked on the statement of deceased’s brother Ranjit Singh of Sahliwal village.
According to the police, preliminary medical examination has revealed that acid or some kind of chemical was thrown on the face of deceased Manjit Singh. But, the exact cause of the death is yet to be ascertained.
Ranjit told the police that around 11 pm on November 28, Harjinder and Jagsir took Manjit along with them after having dinner. But, Manjit did not return in the morning.
He said he went to meet Harjinder and asked about Manjit. They told him that they had dropped his brother near the Sheikhbhatti village canal. He said they tried to find his brother, but to no avail. He added that on Tuesday, they came to know that the police had recovered a body in sugarcane fields at Sheikhbhatti village.
Sub-inspector Manmeetpal Singh as Manjit’s face was disfigured, his family members identified him from his cloths. He said a medical board had been constituted for a postmortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of the death.
The police officer said a preliminary probe indicated that the victim and the accused were hooked to drugs. He said efforts were on to nab the suspects.
A case under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the IPC has been registered.
