Batala, August 30
Fear gripped local residents when two gangsters fired at a police party in Rattar Chattar village near Dharamkot Randhawa in jurisdiction of the Dera Baba Nanak police station.
In the last few months, there has been an increase in extortion calls following which the Batala police has launched a special drive to identify and nab the people who plan and execute these calls.
On August 21, the police nabbed five gangsters who were stated to be involved in placing extortion calls to a shopkeeper of Dharamkot Randhawa.
Today, after questioning all the five, the police decided to take two of them to the spot where gangsters admitted they had hidden arms.
Once they reached the spot, the police started following the accused. However, in a swift action, both the gangsters retrieved a pistol and other arms and suddenly started firing at the police party. The police returned the fire following which the two accused sustained injuries.
They have been admitted to the Dera Baba Nanak Sub-Divisional Civil Hospital.
SSP Suhail Qasim Mir reached the spot along with a team of senior officials. The police did not disclose the names of the injured.
