The police arrested two youths, Maninder Singh and Gursharan, for attempting to extort Rs 50 lakh from a hotel owner by posing as members of the Harry Chatha gang.

The extortion began when the hotel owner received calls from foreign numbers demanding the large sum. After initially ignoring the calls, the victim filed a complaint after repeated threats. Police efforts to trace the foreign numbers led to Maninder’s arrest in Jalandhar. His arrest then led to the capture of Gursharan from Kot Mehtab on January 23. The duo, who had no prior criminal record, devised the extortion plan after facing hardships in Armenia. After their police remand expired, they were sent to judicial custody on January 28.
