Acting on a tip-off, the Amritsar Rural Police have confiscated 1 kg of high quality heroin and arrested two persons in this connection here on Saturday.
Those arrested were identified as Namdev Singh of Kot Khalsa and Bobby of Kot Atma Singh in Ram Bagh area here. The police also recovered Rs 60,000 of drug money and impounded the scooter on which they were travelling at the time of seizure.
Amritsar Rural Police SSP Satinder Singh said the Punjab Police were committed to nailing drug smugglers in order to make Punjab a drug-free state. He said that Gharinda police today got a specific input that the duo were involved in the cross- border drug peddling.
“The informer told that they were coming from Hardo Rattan border village to Dhanoe alongside a drain. Police teams headed by Attari DSP Sukhjinder Thapar and SHO Arjun Kumar immediately swung into action and laid a naka on the stretch,” he said. The suspects, riding a scooter, were stopped and during search the police confiscated two packets containing 500 gm heroin each from them. Following the seizure, the police have registered a case with the Gharinda police station in this connection.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Namdev had links with Pakistan-based smugglers and he got the two packets smuggled from Pakistan through a drone at Harodo Rattan village area on Friday. His accomplice retrieved the drugs from the border village and handed it over to Namdev. Investigations were on to identify his backward and forward links to smash the entire drug cartel after bringing him on police remand, the SSP added.
