The SHO said that as the spot was nearer to the police station, he along with a police force immediately reached the spot and initiated rescue operations by stopping the flow of water in the canal. He said the car of the deceased was locked from inside and canal water entered the car which made it difficult for the patwaris to come out. The SHO said that after the car of the deceased was taken out of the canal, they were brought to the Civil Hospital, Patti, where doctors declared them dead.

On the basis of the statement of Harpreet Singh, brother of the deceased Ranjodh Singh, the police have lodged a report (DDR) under Section 174 of the CrPC. It is pertinent to mention here that the father of the deceased Ranjodh Singh also drowned in the same canal at the same spot in 2000. Ranjodh Singh was married just three years back and has a one-year-old son.
