Two students clear NMMS



Amritsar: Two students of Government Middle School, Bhoewali, cleared the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) exam, results of which were declared recently. Lucky, a student of Class IX, had secured over 90 per cent marks in internal examinations conducted for Class VIII this march. Coming from an impoverished family he overcame shortcomings at home while pursuing education. His parents work at a brick kiln to earn livelihood. His two other sisters are also good at studies. Arshdeep Singh is son of a driver working at a combine harvest machine. Their teacher Pankaj Sharma said both of them had put combined efforts to win the Inspire Award of Rs 10,000 last year. The NMMS is a centralised scheme, which provides 2,210 students with scholarships worth Rs 12,000 per annum in the state. The students get this scholarship from Class IX till XII. TNS

Sewa Kendras to open 9 am to 5 pm

Tarn Taran: The Sewa Kendras in the district will be operational from 9 am to 5 pm, including Saturday. District Magistrate Kulwant Singh said the people would be free to visit the Sewa Kender without prior permission. PO arrested with 280-gm heroin

Tarn Taran: A team of the Chohla Sahib police, led by Sub-Inspector Navdeep Singh, arrested a criminal with 280 gm of heroin from the link road leading to Chohla Sahib from Sarhali village on tuesday. SSP Dhruman H Nimbale said the accused had been identified as Sukhchain Singh Sonu of Mohanpur village. The SSP said the accused was facing 14 criminal cases under different category of offences. The court had declared him proclaimed offender in two cases. The accused has been booked under Sections 21,61 and 85 of NDPS Act. Dharam Kaur, mother of the accused, too was facing five criminal cases under different offences. OC
