Amritsar: UK Theological and Religious Studies president and University of Wolverhampton Centre for Sikh and Punjabi Studies Director Dr Opinderjit Kaur Takhar addressed members of the Chief Khalsa Diwan, school students and staff here. CKD president Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar welcomed Dr Takhar. The scholar shared information about invaluable contributions made by Sikhs to the UK’s economic development. During the meeting, CKD officials expressed concern that a large number of Sikh families and their children living in the UK were moving away from their rich heritage and Sikhism. Efforts made by the CKD in collaboration with the administration and governments to intensify the spread of Sikhism in the UK, to establish unique identities of Sikhs and Sikh values and to promote Punjabi language were highlighted. Dr Opinderjit promised to provide all possible academic, social and political support in the UK.

Scholarship for DAV students

Principal Dr Rajesh Kumar awarded special Sanskrit scholarship of Rs 2,400 to students studying Sanskrit at DAV College here. At an event to mark International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the principal asked all students to take a pledge to not consume intoxicants throughout their lives and to serve their parents with reverence. Addressing the students, Dr Rajesh said Sanskrit is a scientific language and mother of all Indian languages. “DAV has always promoted Sanskrit language. Sanskrit is also known as “Dev Bhasha”. This year, 69 students have been given scholarship worth Rs 4,800, which includes Rs 2,400 cheque and waiver of Rs 2400 fee,” he said.

Bhavan’s hardik brings laurels

Bhavan’s student Hardik Sharma from Class XII (Non-Medical) has qualified Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana exam (KVPY-SX) with 586 all-India rank and brought laurels to the institute and district by bagging the first position in Amritsar. The KVPY is a programme of the Centre under which students, who qualify it, are eligible for a fellowship as well as admission into premier institutes such as IISc, IISER etc. Director Principal Dr Anita Bhalla congratulated and wished him luck for the future.

Farewell party at Khalsa institute

Farewell parties were held for outgoing students at Khalsa College Girls Senior Secondary School and Khalsa College of Engineering and Technology, Ranjit Avenue. KCET director Dr Manju Bala and school Principal Puneet Kaur Nagpal expressed happiness over the activities and achievements of the students and wished them a bright and prosperous future. Cultural items such as monoacting, mimicry and dance were performed by juniors for their seniors. With inspiring words, Bala advised the students to be determined and patient and never look back. Amritpal Singh and Mahikdeep Kaur were adjudged Mr and Ms Farewell-2022. A farewell was also organised for Class X and XII students of Khalsa College Girls Senior Secondary School.

Date to apply for CET extended

As final year examinations of UG courses in Panjab University as well as Punjabi University were still being conducted, there has been a continuous representation from candidates for postponement of the GNDU Common Entrance Test (CET) besides extension in the last date of application. An advisory committee, constituted by the GNDU Vice-chancellor, in an online meeting held on June 27 discussed the representations of the candidates and the institutions concerned, and decided to postpone the CET to July 31 so that all eligible candidates may get sufficient time to apply and appear for the test. Keeping in line, the last date to apply online has been extended to July 15. The revised activity schedule has been updated on the admission portal Punjabbedadmissions.org. The applicants and participants can share their queries and views on pbbedadmissions2022 @gndu.ac.in and contact on 01832823183. Guru Nanak Dev University had been asked to conduct the CET and centralised counseling for admissions to BEd course in all state colleges. Coordinator Prof (Dr) Amit Kauts said as of then, over 8,000 candidates had already registered.

Programme on cyber safety

Mount Litera Zee School director Manjot Dhillon initiated a cyber awareness programme for school students. Recently, Dhillon was also invited to speak on the topic of cyber safety and the exigent need to educate and empower adolescents, teens and youth to tackle the problem on a national platform. Dhillon said in a world tethered to social media and Internet, under the cloak of anonymity, the threats that lurk are invisible and infinite. It is incumbent on educators to take cognisance of the scenario and equip students, teachers and parents with the skills to explore the cyber world safely and securely.

NCC cadets awarded medals

Tarn Taran: Muskandeep Kaur and Tarndeep Kaur, NCC cadets of Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary Public School, Jhabal, were honoured with medals at an NCC summer camp organised recently at Elite Public School, Jandiala Guru. Principal Urminder Kaur said 15 cadets of the school participated in the 10-day camp besides a total of 477 cadets from different schools of Tarn Taran and Amritsar. Muskandeep and Tarndeep presented patriotic songs and delivered speeches in the camp. oc
