Amritsar: Members of the CKD planted saplings in the yard of Sri Guru Harkrishan Public School, Majitha Road bypass, to mark Van Mahotsav. Forty-five different shade and ornamental plants, including Arjun, Sukhchain, Behera, Suhanjana and Habiskus were planted with the help of Avtar Singh Ghulla. On the occasion, Chief Khalsa Diwan Honorary Secretary Ajit Singh Basra and patron Rajmahinder Singh Majithia addressed the gathering and highlighted the importance of trees in life. He said in the name of overpopulation and economic growth, deforestation in the recent past has endangered the very existence of trees on the face of the earth. He emphasised the need to not only increase the green belt by planting trees to save the health of the present and future generations, but also to take proper care and maintenance of the plants to convert them into trees.

School holds workshop on music

A workshop titled “Music as a Medicine” was organised at Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary Public School, GT Road, under the aegis of CKD to keep teachers abreast with the latest instructional strategies in the changing scenario. Earlier music was used to ease stress, promote sleep and soothe pain. Dr Kulwinder from Lovely Professional University, Phagwara; Dr Taranjit Singh (Lovely Professional University) and Dr Jatinder Singh (Shaheed Sikh Missionary College, Amritsar) were the chief speakers. The chief guest in his speech said, “Music is especially effective in young children because it is non-threatening and a non-verbal medium. It can enhance self-expression, self-esteem, learning, communication and moreover helpful in the overall development.

DAV students visit GNDU agri dept

Students of biotechnology (semester six) of DAV College, Amritsar, accompanied by Dr Vikas Gupta, visited the biotechnology department of Guru Nanak Dev University. The students got a chance to visit and interact with teachers and research scholars in different disciplines where they were demonstrated various experiments in the areas of plant biotechnology, cancer pharmacology and value addition. Head of the biotechnology department at GNDU, Prof PK Pati, guided the students and faculty members of DAV, Amritsar. They were also introduced to the modern methods of conserving rare germplasm in the plant tissue culture repository and their preservation in the herbarium in seed/plant parts/specimen forms. They also had the opportunity to see various types of experimental mice on which high-end experiments related to drug testing were in progress in the animal house. Dr Aman and Dr Simarpal demonstrated various experiments at the incubation centre and also discussed with the students about various start-ups in this field.

Dental check-up camp held

The Chief Khalsa Diwan in collaboration with Sri Guru Ram Das Dental Science and Research Institute hosted a dental check-up and awareness camp for the dental healthcare of the children at the central Khalsa orphanage and school students under CKD educational institutions. The treatment was provided on the spot while the children were given free treatment at Sri Guru Ram Das Dental Hospital for complex dental problems. During the camp, the children were also given medicines as required. A team of Dr Satinder Singh Walia, Dr Mohit Gupta, Dr Jasmine Grover, Dr Simran Gupta and other specialist doctors examined the teeth of more than 200 children and shared tips for dental care. Ajit Singh Basra said in future such eye, ear and dental check-up camps would also be set up for the children of other Chief Khalsa Diwan schools. tns

Meritorious kids felicitated

Tarn Taran: Three Class X students, who secured a place in the state merit list of the PSEB results declared recently, were felicitated by the managing committee and authorities of Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Senior Secondary School, Kang. These students bagged meritorious positions at the district level too. Managing Director Amandeep Singh Kang said school student Simarpreet Kaur secured 97.69 per cent marks and stood first in the district. She also secured the ninth rank in the state merit list. Harmanpreet Kaur, who stood second in the district by getting 97.23 per cent marks, was placed at the 12th position in the state merit list. Harnoor Kaur, who stood third in the district by securing 96.92 per cent marks, was placed at the 14th rank in the state merit list. The meritorious students were honoured by founder of the school Harbhajan Singh and school authorities. A total of four students of the district secured a place in the state merit list. Three girl students are of Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Senior Secondary School, Kang, and the fourth is Sumanpreet Kaur of Government Senior Secondary School, Sabhra.
