Veterans make way for freshers in MC
Veteran politicians who were elected several times in past elections would be conspicuous by their absence in the Municipal Corporation House this time. Some of them didn’t contest the election and some contested but lost. Former Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu, Senior Deputy Mayor Raman Bakshi and Deputy Mayor Yunus Kumar would not be in the next MC General House though they were there in the last MC House. Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu had left the Congress party and joined the Aam Aadmi Party in February 2022. This time, Karamjit Singh Rintu didn’t contest the MC elections. Most of the candidates backed by Rintu were also defeated.
Former Senior Deputy Mayor Raman Bakshi’s ward was reserved for women, so he too did not contest the election this time. Former Deputy Mayor and four-time councillor Yunus Kumar contested the election from ward number 68 on a Congress party ticket but was defeated by BJP candidate Vikas Gill. In this way, all the three main office-bearers of the previous General House have disappeared from the House.
Besides the main office-bearers, some veterans were also defeated in the elections. Three-time Congress councillor Mahesh Khanna will also not be a part of the MC House this time. Mahesh Khanna, who was known for his bluntness in the General House meetings and had good knowledge of the Municipal Corporation Act, has been defeated by Aam Aadmi Party’s Vicky Dutta. Senior most four-time Congress councillor Mamta Dutta has also been defeated this time.
