Amritsar, February 20
The Village defence committees (VDC) formed in border villages on the instructions of Governor Banwari Lal Purohit were told to keep an eye on drug peddling in their respective areas to help prevent any untoward incidents from occurring. They were also asked to maintain liaison with the police.
Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said this in a meeting with the VDCs of Ghonewal, Saido Gazi, Nissoke, Sanghoke and Panjgrain villages in Ajnala on Tuesday. He appreciated the performance of the VDCs so far and said that prizes had been given to them on the basis of their performance.
The DC asked the VDCs to keep an eye on drug trafficking from across the border and share information, if any, with the police immediately. “Even the arrival of drones must be reported swiftly so that drug trafficking may be stopped.” DC Thori asked VDC representatives to motivate youngsters to stay away from drugs so that they did not fall prey to addiction and the menace could be eradicated.
During the meeting BSF official BK Dwivedi said patrolling on the border had been increased to prevent trafficking and action was being taken against peddlers by establishing coordination with the police. He said the jawans of BSF were always present at the border due to which smuggling through the borders had been curbed to a large extent.
Assistant Commissioner Vivek Modi, Ajnala SDM Arvinder Pal Singh, Block Development and Panchayat Officer Sukhjit Singh, DSP Rajkumar and officials of other departments were present.
