Amritsar, August 22
Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori held a meeting with officials regarding waste management in the district and instructed that as per government policy, a storage facility be created for the collected waste and that wet and dry waste should be collected separately from houses. He directed officials to ensure in-house compliance of the instructions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
Giving details of the ongoing works in the municipal councils, Additional Deputy Commissioner Nikas Kumar said, “We have started collecting wet and dry waste in seven municipal councils of the district and we will reach most of the houses by September 15. By the end of the year, arrangement will be made in almost 100 per cent of the houses. Arrangements are being made to clean and use the old garbage collected in the city and to remove the piles of garbage. So far, this arrangement has been working well in Raia, Majitha, Baba Bakala Sahib and Ramdas. In Ajnala and Jandiala Guru, garbage collection is still at an early stage.”
ADC Kumar said that work is also on to process the collected waste. “A target of 80 to 100 per cent has been achieved in Ramdas, Baba Bakala Sahib, Rajasansi, Raia, Ajnala and Jandiala Guru while in Majitha, we have managed about 50 per cent.” He assured that the targets given by the government will be achieved ahead of time.
