The accused was on Thursday produced in a court which remanded him in police custody for three days. The couple have a 13-year-old daughter and a six-year-old son. Balwinder Singh died on the intervening night of December 2 and 3 last year. Investigating officer ASI Gajjan Singh said the Sarhali police had registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC and sent the viscera for examination to the forensic lab.

Harjit Singh, elder brother of the victim, in his statement to the police alleged that the accused, Harpreet Kaur, had illicit relations with Lovpreet Singh, a resident of the nearby village of Jatta, and Balwinder Singh had objected to her affair and asked her to mend her ways.

She served him dinner laced with poison on December 3 leading to his death. He was taken to hospital where the doctors declared him dead. ASI Gajjan Singh said a case under Section 304 of the BNS has been registered and further investigation has been initiated.
