Will promote handmade wooden chess sets, says DC
Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney held a special meeting with owners of chess manufacturing units to discuss how to develop the industry further on a global scale.
She said wooden chess pieces, exclusively made in Amritsar, are exported internationally and the need of the hour is to develop it into a commercially viable industry. “Steps should be taken to further promote the chess industry in Amritsar,” she said.
The Deputy Commissioner said to further promote chess, handcrafted wooden chess sets will be exhibited at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International airport, the railway station and other places so that outside tourists can get more information about this local industry.
Representatives of the chess industry demanded that chess shops must be opened at other prominent places of Amritsar and that difficulties faced by the chess industry in getting electricity connections within the city limits be resolved. They demanded that efforts should be made to allot a place on a subsidy basis during the international and state trade expo like PITEX.
