Woman dies by suicide at Khanwal village

A married woman died after consuming some poisonous substance at Khanwal village here on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Manjot Kaur. The police have booked the paternal uncle of her husband on the charge of abetment to suicide. He has been absconding since the incident.

Satti, mother of the deceased and a resident of Bhindi Saida, in her complaint to the police, said that the accused used to quarrel with the victim and her husband over the ownership of house. Giving details, Satti said that she had three children and Manjot was the eldest among them. She was married to Manpreet Singh of Khanwal village five years ago. Manpreet and his younger brother Charanjit Singh were orphans and used to live with their uncle Mahinder Singh at their ancestral house in Khanwal village which was a joint property.

She alleged that Mahinder Singh used to quarrel with Manpreet and Manjot Kaur over the division of the house and harass them on one pretext or the other. She said that yesterday, Manpreet had gone to work in Bhindi Saida. He got a call from his younger brother Charanjit Singh who said that their uncle was quarrelling with Manjot Kaur and perturbed over this, she had consumed some poisonous substance. Her condition had deteriorated, he said. Satti said they immediately rushed to Khanwal and took Manjot to a hospital, but she died on the way.
