A youth died under mysterious circumstances at Sanjay Gandhi Colony in the Navi Abadi area on the Fatehgarh Churian road here yesterday. The police have arrested one person and launched an investigation into the matter.

Vikas (27) had returned home after celebrating Lohri at his friend’s house. He went to sleep in the night and the next morning, he was found dead. His body bore injury marks. Following statement by Kanta, the mother of deceased, the police booked five persons on the charge of culpable homicide.

One of the suspects, identified as Shubham, alias Bobby, was arrested while the remaining were absconding. Among others, who were booked, were identified as Ravi, Lalla Dipu wala, Husan and Ankush, all residents of Sanjay Gandhi Colony.

Kanta stated to the police that this was first Lohri of Shubham after marriage. She said he along with his friends and relatives was celebrating Lohri at the rooftop of his house where other suspects Ravi, Lalla Dipu wala and his two sons Ankush and Husan were also present. She said her son Vikas also went there and they flied kites and consumed liquor together.

She said as Vikas had consumed a lot of liquor, Shubham and others dropped him at her house in the evening. She said in the morning, they found Vikas dead. His body bore injury marks. She said initially the police initiated inquest proceedings in the case. Kanta said later, she came to know that Vikas was beaten up by the suspects.

Varinder Singh Khosa, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), North, said following Kanta’s statement, the police registered a culpable homicide case against five persons. He said further appropriate action would be taken after getting the autopsy report of the victim’s body.
