The programme includes strategies for waste segregation, composting and recycling, with the goal of reducing waste generation. A central feature of the initiative is the vermi-composting unit on campus, managed by Dr Sita, Assistant Professor of Botany at the college.

The college principal, Surinder Kaur, highlighted the importance of sustainability in academic settings. “Our institutions have always been pioneers of progressive initiatives. The ‘Zero Waste Management Programme’ is not only an environmental measure but an educational one, encouraging our students to adopt responsible waste management practices for a cleaner, greener future,” she said.

Dr Sita explained the significance of organic waste recycling. “Through this programme, we are not only reducing waste but also producing nutrient-rich compost for our campus gardens. This initiative demonstrates how educational institutions can lead by example, transforming waste into a valuable resource,” she noted.

Sanam Sutirath Wazir, State Climate Action Head at ASAR (Air Care Centre), commended the programme, stating, “Zero waste campuses are essential. By implementing this programme, Khalsa College for Women is setting a benchmark for other institutions across the state and beyond. It is a crucial step in reducing landfill reliance and promoting circular economy practices.”
