Chandigarh Administrator orders infra upgrade at animal centre

UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria today paid a surprise visit to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), located in Sector 38 (West). During the visit, the Administrator expressed dissatisfaction with the existing infrastructure and facilities available for the care of animals. He directed the officials concerned to take immediate steps to upgrade the veterinary services and overall infrastructure.

The Administrator observed that there were inadequate facilities, particularly for the treatment of large animals. He emphasised the urgent need to upgrade essential areas such as the operation theatre and medical units to ensure comprehensive treatment for all types of animals.

He also asked the officials to prepare a comprehensive plan for upgrading the existing veterinary hospital to provide better care and shelter for animals.

Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar and UT Chief Engineer CB Ojha were also present during the visit.

Notably, a couple of days earlier, Sehjeevi, a charitable trust working for animal welfare, highlighted the appalling conditions and mismanagement at the SPCA. Sehjeevi’s executive director Nikki Latta Gill also raised the issue of the recent shifting of animals from the SPCA to Raipur Kalan Animal Birth Control Centre, due to renovation at the former. She informed about the terrible conditions of animals, mainly dogs, in Raipur Kalan, too.
