Dhirubhai Ambani, born Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani on December 28, 1932, in Chorwad, a small village in Gujarat, rose from humble beginnings to become one of India’s most celebrated industrialists. As the founder of Reliance Industries, he revolutionised the Indian business landscape and established one of the largest conglomerates in the country.
The son of a schoolteacher, Dhirubhai displayed entrepreneurial acumen from an early age. As a teenager, he sold ‘bhajias’ (fried snacks) to pilgrims at Girnar, showcasing his knack for identifying opportunities. Financial constraints, however, forced him to seek work abroad, and at 17, he moved to Yemen, where he worked as a clerk for A. Besse & Co., a trading firm. It was here that Dhirubhai gained valuable insights into international trade, finance and the commodities market.
In 1958, he returned to India with a dream of starting his own business. Armed with a small amount of capital, Dhirubhai began trading spices, textiles and other goods under the name Reliance Commercial Corporation. Operating from a small office in Mumbai, he focused on building strong supplier relationships and understanding market dynamics. His initial successes laid the foundation for what would later become Reliance Industries.
Dhirubhai’s big breakthrough came in the 1970s when he entered the textile industry with the launch of the ‘Vimal’ brand. Known for its high-quality fabrics, Vimal became a household name in India, earning Dhirubhai the title of a pioneer in modern retailing. His ability to market the brand effectively, coupled with his commitment to quality, helped Reliance gain widespread recognition.
One of Dhirubhai’s most remarkable achievements was his ability to democratise wealth creation. He took Reliance public in 1977, inviting ordinary Indians to invest in his company. Thousands of small investors bought Reliance shares, and for many, this marked their first foray into the stock market. Reliance soon became one of the most trusted and sought-after stocks in India.
Dhirubhai’s vision extended beyond textiles. He diversified Reliance into petrochemicals, telecommunications, energy and infrastructure, transforming it into a vertically integrated powerhouse. His philosophy of integrating every step of the value chain — starting from raw materials to finished products — set Reliance apart from its competitors.
Despite facing controversies and challenges, including allegations of corporate malpractice, Dhirubhai remained undeterred. His resilience, combined with an unmatched ability to navigate complex business and political environments, cemented his status as a visionary entrepreneur.
In 2002, Dhirubhai suffered a stroke and passed away on July 6, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy. Under his leadership, Reliance Industries became synonymous with ambition, innovation and scale. Today, it is one of India’s largest conglomerates and his sons, Mukesh and Anil Ambani, have carried forward his vision.
Dhirubhai Ambani’s story is a testament to the power of dreams, determination and hard work. From a small-town boy to the architect of India’s corporate empire, he inspired millions with his belief that no goal is too big to achieve. His life continues to be a source of inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs worldwide.
