Karnal lad Anshul’s cricket dream turns into reality, gets England Test call-up

A young boy from Fazilpur village in Karnal district is all set to script history on the English soil. A fast bowler, Anshul Kamboj, has been called up to team India’s Test squad for the upcoming Manchester Test against England, starting on July 23. If all goes well, the 23-year-old could make his international debut — a proud moment not only for his family and Karnal but for all of Haryana.

Once seen practicing barefoot with a ball on the dusty grounds of his village, Anshul is now part of India’s 15-member squad for the crucial fourth Test of the series. Injuries to key pacers Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh opened the door, and Anshul’s domestic record made him the natural choice for selectors.

From the fields of Fazilpur to the world stage, Anshul’s rise has been marked by hard work, dedication and his talent. He started formal cricket training at the age of eight, supported by his father Udham Singh, a humble farmer who recognised his son’s passion early on.

Anshul had captured the spotlight after becoming the third bowler in Ranji Trophy history to claim all 10 wickets in an inning against Kerala last year. “This is a dream come true, not just for me, but for my entire village and family. Every player dreams of playing for India, and I am determined to give my best in the opportunities ahead. I want to perform for the country like I did in the Ranji Trophy,” said Anshul to his family members on a phone call. Coach Satish Rana expressed pride on his selection and said, “Anshul has worked hard since childhood. His selection is a big moment for Karnal and Haryana. He has earned this through performance.”

His father, Udham Singh and mother Pinki Kamboj are also praying for the success of Anshul and team India in the fourth Test.
