Hundreds of residents, especially women, on Sunday protested against the opening of a liquor shop in Raj Nagar Colony here.
The protesters pulled out the salesman outside and locked the liquor shop.The protesting women said that the drunkards had vitiated the atmosphere in the colony, with ruckus and use of abusive language all the time, making women and children feel unsafe in the area.
Alleging the liquor shop has spread addiction in every house in the vicinity, the protesters demanded that shift the vend be shifted somewhere else. A resident urged the authorities to cancel the shop's licence with immediate effect. A woman protester said that a temple was merely 20 metres away from this shop while a satsang bhawan around 50 meters. Scores of women and children visit these two places and the presence of drunkards and the liquor shop made them uncomfortable.
The residents said they had met the Deputy Commissioner over the issue, but despite that the liquor shop hadn't been shut. It would not be tolerated at any cost, the protester said.
Following the protest, the police also reached the spot and tried to pacify the protesters.
