Bathinda, March 14

World Sikh Environment Day was observed by residents of Mansa at Central Park on Saturday. Members of the Mansa Central Park committee planted trees to mark the occasion.

Rajwinder Singh Rana, president of the committee, said, “March 14 has been dedicated to World Sikh Environment Day, which is celebrated all over the world every year. The day is dedicated to the seventh Sikh Guru Har Rai as he always advocated the conservation of the environment. It was started in the year 2010 in the US by a Sikh organisation.”

Gurlabh Singh, an executive member of the committee, said, “There is only 4 per cent area left under the forest cover in Punjab and it is further decreasing at an alarming rate. So, the day was celebrated for the first time by residents of Mansa district by gathering at the Central Park area and planted trees of fruits, flowers and shadowy trees.”

Residents took the pledge that they would ensure a proper upkeep of the trees planted by them today until they grew fully. And if any tree dies in between, they would plant another tree in its place. On the occasion, Nazar Singh Manshahia, MLA, and Mandeep Gora, president, nagar council, Mansa, among others were present at the venue.

Manshahia said it was imperative that a committee was formed to ensure that the beauty of the park was maintained and that pending works were completed.
