Chandigarh, December 10

On the second day of the two days 17th IASSI Annual Conference on 'Education and Development: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities' at the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development (CRRID), it was observed that education should not be left to the private sector.

Professor Alakh N Sharma, Member-Secretary, Indian Association of Social Science Institutions (IASSI) and Director, Institute for Human Development, New Delhi, said education has to be considered public good and should not be left to the private sector. Prof SR Hashim, Chairman, Indian Association of Social Science Institutions (IASSI) (Former Chairman, UPSC and Former Member-Secretary, Planning Commission) chaired the valedictory session. He highlighted that the country faces many challenges in expanding education and skill development and it is beyond the managerial capacity of the public sector. The valedictory address was delivered by Governor of Haryana Kaptan Singh Solanki. He said, “Expenditure on education and health in modern economics is treated as an investment in human capital formation. There is a high co-relation between human capital formation and economic development.” —TNS
