How did you begin your journey of being a stand-up comedian?
My first performance as a stand-up comedian was for a Punjabi channel. In those days, I used to write my own act and perform. But I wasn’t that great on stage. Slowly and gradually, I improved after observing my colleagues — Kapil Sharma, Rajiv Thakur and Chandan. Now I am happy that people recognise me.
What has been the turning point of your career?
Entertainment Ki Raat has been a turning point of my career. Before this show, there were already several big comedians, so there was not much opportunity.
You are known for your fitness, what’s the mantra?
Earlier, people had a mind-set that comedians are fat or bald. They should look funny to make people laugh! Going by my look and lean body, nobody thought that I would be a comedian, but I never compromised on fitness.
Most of our comedians are from Punjab. Why so?
Almost 90 per cent of the stand-up comedians performing on TV or doing live shows are from Punjab. I think the reason is because all of us are connected and a chain has been built. Our seniors helped us move to Mumbai and meet the right person. Secondly, I think Punjabis are always happy. No matter what problems we are going through, we always spread happiness.
What is the best thing you love about Punjab?
Being in Mumbai now, I miss Punjabi food the most. I love everything about Punjab; it’s culture, people, everything!
