A peep into Ustaadji’s life
The Triveni Sangeet Sabha is screening the film, Rasan Piya, as part of their baithak programme on December 19. The film is based on the life of the late Padmabhushan Ustaad Abdul Rashid Khan, an exceptional singer of the Gwalior Gharana.
Ustaadji surrendered his life to classical music and mesmerised his audiences by defying age and singing well into the last years of his life. He passed away earlier this year at the age of 106.
Ustaad sahib was a direct descendent of Surat Sen, the third son of Tansen. He possessed a deep understanding of music which was reflected in his wide repertoire. He was also an accomplished poet and composed many beautiful bandishes under his pen name Rasan Piya.
His purity and depth of singing touched the souls of all those who were fortunate to have heard him. He received several awards which included the ITC Award, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Kashi Swar Ganga Award, Ras Sagar Award, Ras Rang Samman, among many others.
Rasan Piya has been conceptualised and directed by young Niharika Popli. It is a spectacular insight into the life and musical journey of Ustaad Abdul Rashid Khan. Niharika will be joining us at the screening of the film.
Following this, there will be a short recital by Ustaad sahib’s leading shagird Subhomoy Bhattacharya.
An artist of All-India Radio, Sobhomoyji specialises in khayal and thumri genres. He also sings geets, ghazals, and bhajans. He has sung at many prestigious conferences such as The Dover Lane Music Conference, The Salt Lake Music Festival, The All Bengal Music Competition to name a few.
