3 robbery cases, 2 arrests

Three robbery and snatching incidents have been reported in the city in the past 24 hours.

Three unknown armed persons robbed Rs 52,000 from a local resident, identified as Hardev Singh of Varpal village, when he was returning home after withdrawing cash from Punjab Gramin Bank, Daburji branch, here on Wednesday.

Hardev stated to the police that he went to the bank on his bike and withdrew money for some domestic work. While returning to his home, when he reached near Chatiwind village, three persons travelling on a motorcycle came from behind and forced him to stop. They snatched Rs 52,000 from him and fled away.

Sub-Inspector Harjinder Singh, investigating officer, said an investigation was under progress to identify the suspects. He said CCTV cameras near the bank and alongside the nearby roads are being examined to get clues about the robbers.

The police have registered a case under Section 379-B of the IPC at Chatiwind police station in this connection.

Meawhile, the Majitha road police nabbed two alleged snatchers, identified as Manpreet Singh and Ravi Kumar, both residents of Patti Bagge Wali in Verka. They have been accused of snatching a mobile from another local resident, Sanjiv Kumar. The police recovered the phone and impounded the motorcycle of the accused.

Sanjiv informed the police that at around 9.30 pm on Tuesday, he was on foot when two motorcycle-borne persons came from behind and snatched his mobile phone near Care and Cure Hospital on Batala road and fled away. He said he raised the alarm following which the onlookers tried to nab them. In the melee, they fell down from their bike. Passersby caught Manpreet while Ravi managed to slip away. Nevertheless, he was arrested later.

In another incident, two persons robbed a mobile phone and Rs 2,000 from one Ghansham who was travelling on his bicycle here on Wednesday evening. He stated to the police that near Sandhu Colony, two unknown persons attacked him with sharp weapons and snatched his mobile, cash and bicycle.

The Sadar police have registered a case under Sections 379-B (2) and 34 of the IPC.

The cases

  • Hardev Singh of Varpal village withdrew Rs 52,000 from Punjab Gramin Bank, Daburji branch, and while returning on his bike, he was forced by three armed bikers near Chatiwind village to stop following which they took away his money. 
  • Two bikers snatched a mobile from a local man, who raised the alarm following which passersby caught hold of him. Identified as Manpreet Singh and Ravi Kumar, both are residents of Patti Bagge Wali in Verka.
  • Two persons attack a cyclist near Sandhu Colony and take away his mobile phone, Rs 2,000 along with his bicycle.
