5 snatching cases in past 24 hours

There is no let-up in snatching instances in the holy city which witnessed around five such instances in the past 24 hours. Going by these instances, it has been observed that miscreants were striking in the wee hours.

Local resident Harish Sahdev stated to the Civil Lines police that he was going to Bijli Pehalwan Temple on Lawrence Road at around 4.30 am when two motorcycle-borne persons intercepted him near Saini heart care centre and snatched Rs 4,120 and a mobile phone from his possession. He was travelling in a car.

Similarly, Vipan Mehra told the police that he was going to the railway station for his onward journey to Chandigarh by train when three unknown persons stanched Rs 2,200 and a mobile phone from him. Before running away, they also removed his wrist watch and jacket. The incident occurred at around 4.30 am and he was travelling on his scooter.

Another victim, Vinod Kumar, stated that he was returning from Hoshiarpur after attending a function on his motorcycle at around 3.40 am when unknown persons stopped him near Om Dhaba near Fairland colony and snatched Rs 22,000 from him.

In another incident, miscreants snatched the purse of a girl in the Ranjit Avenue area. Her mother, Shivani Mehra, said she was returning home on rickshaw when the incident took place near Parwati Devi Hospital. She was having Rs 7,000 cash in her purse.

Similarly, Swainiderjit Kaur was robbed by two unidentified persons at Nageena Avenue when she was returning home.

In another incident, two unidentified armed persons barged into a house and took away gold jewellery after taking a woman hostage in the Chheharta area. The victim, Shashi Taneja, stated to the police that she was alone at home when the accused with covered faces gained entry on the pretext of handing over a parcel to her son. They decamped with Rs 20,000 and gold ornaments worth lakhs of rupees.

Separate cases have been registered.
