Around five thousand students of different schools pledged for a green and eco-friendly Diwali in a function held at Government Saragarhi Memorial Secondary School, Town Hall here.

Minister of School Education and Environment OP Soni was the chief guest. The event was jointly organised by the Education Department and Amritsar Vikas Manch.

The minister exhorted the students to say no to firecrackers, not individually but at collectively organised functions.

“We must pledge to keep environment clean. These kids can play a major role in creating a green environment. All of us must celebrate green and pollution-free Diwali and keep our surroundings clean,” added Soni.

The minister announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh for the development of Saragarhi Memorial School. He assured them that their demand of furniture in schools would be fulfilled by spending Rs 25 crore.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Rajesh Sharma, Chief Engineer, Punjab Pollution Control Board GS Majithia, District Education Officer (DEO) Salvinder Singh Samra, Kulwant Rai Sharma, Charanjit Singh Gumtala of Amritsar Vikas Manch and Principal Balwinder Singh were among the prominent present.
